Omicron variant XBB.1.16, termed the Arcturus variant, continues to spread in India as cases climb. It has now been found in 22 countries per the World Health Organization.
A cousin of XBB.1.5, the variant responsible for more than 90% of cases in the USA, XBB.1.16 has a few additional notable mutations that may aid in immune escape and reinfection risk. Luckily, there isn’t any data to suggest it causes increased risk for severe infection or death. Symptoms seem to be similar to previous Omicron variants. It has been found in the USA, but not to a notable degree as of yet as our cases continue to decrease.
