Long COVID-19 has afflicted and continues to afflict thousands of people worldwide. There is no known treatment for it. The RECOVER group has just publicly announced that they will be doing large scale testing on a new medication to treat Long COVID-19 and that medication is Paxlovid. https://recovercovid.org
Paxlovid, or Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir, is a SARS-CoV-2 protease inhibitor currently being used to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 as an outpatient. https://www.fda.gov/media/155051/down…
As we learn more about Long COVID-19, also termed Post Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), three main theories have become central to our understanding of why it happens to some. The first two theories revolve around microvascular thrombosis and immune system dysregulation. The third theory though centers on the fact that those with Long COVID may actually have persistent viral infection or viral material leading to their prolonged symptoms. https://www.science.org/content/artic…
That third theory is the one that the RECOVER researchers are focusing on by giving 1,700 people with Long COVID 15 days of Paxlovid and seeing if their Long COVID symptoms improve at 90 days. https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/N…
