BQ.1 And BQ.1.1 Now Dominating USA With Cases Rising – Reinfection, Severity, Immunity, Vaccination

For the first time since early August, COVID-19 case counts are increasing in the USA and elsewhere. BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are the two main variants responsible for that growth now representing almost 50% of new cases nationally with BA.5 cases decreasing. They very well may be the variants we see taking off this winter. Let’s talk about all things BQ.1 and BQ.1.1.

BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are two Omicron subvariants that have a high degree of immune escape from previous infection, vaccination, and many of the current outpatient therapies for COVID-19. As it stands though, they do not seem to cause more severe infections.
