Whiteboard Doctor

Many of you have been requesting we cover the Omicron variant BN.1 that is increasing in case counts! We cover those case counts, it’s lineage including where it came from, mutations that make it more contagious, if there are effective treatments, how good vaccination and previous infection is in protecting us against it, any unique symptoms, and how severe of disease it causes.

BN.1 cases are increasing in the United States with a focus in the west and southeast. This is in addition to BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 cases that are dominating, XBB cases that are increasing slightly, and BA.5 and BA.4.6 cases that are decreasing.

It appears that most monoclonal antibodies may not be effective against BN.1. It also seems to have high infection potential even in those vaccinated (although this didn’t include the new bivalent vaccine). Interestingly, those who had and recovered from BA.5 seemed to have less immunity to BN.1 as compared to those that previously had been infected by BA.1 and BA.2. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.11…

It does not seem to have any unique symptoms beyond the classic Omicron symptoms like congestion, sore throat, runny nose, cough, fevers, aches, headaches. It also doesn’t seem to cause anymore severe disease, at least as far as we can tell with the current case counts.
