COVID-19 Omicron variant XBB.1.16, being called Arcturus, may be responsible for surge in cases in India. Should we be worried about an XBB.1.16 surge in the future?
XBB.1.16 is of the XBB lineage, related to the current dominant variant in the USA being XBB.1.5. It has been identified in several countries with highest case counts in India, followed by the United States, Brunei, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Interestingly though, India has a large increase (more than 200%) in new cases over the past two weeks with concern that many of those new cases may be from XBB.1.16.
